Confederate Shell Jacket, US Civil War
This replica is based on the jackets imported from Ireland into the Confederate port of Wilmington, North Carolina and use in the latter stages of the War. The uniforms were made from cadet grey, wool. This shows the layout of the pattern pieces after the sleeves and the back has been sewn together.

The collar and shoulder straps are piped in medium, blue wool. The buttons bear a script I for the Infantry branch of service.

The 4th Connecticut wore a coat like this during the Revolutionary War. This coat is made from brown and red wool. The coat has a partial lining in the skirt or red bay.

I made this coat for a private collector based on the type worn by Hartley's Additional Regiment during the Revolutionary War. The coat is made from dark blue wool and faced with white.
